Who We Are

USA Girl Scouts Overseas (USAGSO) brings Girl Scouts to the daughters of military, foreign service, and American expat families around the world and to girls in American or International schools.  An operating unit of Girl Scouts of the USA, USAGSO ensures that no matter where American families move, they will have access to the Girl Scout Leadership Experience.

History of Brownies in Luxembourg

2nd Luxembourg Brownies began on 28th October 1976. The British Brownie Guide pack shared their meetings with an American Brownie Scout troup, the group was started by a British lady called Sandra who became the leader of the British Brownies and an American mum who was leader of the American Brownies. The unit was registered in UK and America. The British and American Brownies wore different uniforms and made a different promise but the girls did everything together and could even take both promises.

The 1st Luxembourg Guides began on 26th April 1977, originally there were so many girls that they met in a separate venue from the American Girl Scouts at Paul’s play school in Bonnevoie, until they moved to the old American School in.1993 with their leaders Margo and Moira.

The 1st Luxembourg Rainbows unit started on 5th November 1991, at the International School of Luxembourg by Carol, a Kindergarden teacher and they met in an early years classroom.

When the Brownie unit became too large, a new unit, the 3rd Luxembourg Brownie Unit started on 30th November 2008 at the ISL and the 2nd Luxembourg Brownies moved to St.George’s school which was easier for the girls who were at St. George’s school and the European School., they met on a Tuesday to give girls more choice depending on their after school activities. Either unit would accept girls from any school irrespective of where the meetings were held.

The Guide leaders wanted to change their meetings to twice as long but only once every two weeks on a Saturday, this was not possible at ISL  so they moved first to meet at the European school in the portacabins on Kirchberg then, led by Kim and Sarah, they moved to a Luxembourgish Scout hut in Senningberg.

When there were a lot of older, enthusiastic Guides a Ranger unit was started on 2nd June 2009. They met at the same venue as the Guides.

The Brownies had a ‘pack holiday’ every year and every two years either a Benelux County holiday, in one of the Benelux countries or a BGIFC holiday in Foxlease, Hampshire, UK. Staying in a Brownie house with British Brownies from around the world.(BGIFC was British Guides in Foreign Countries now called BGO British Guides Overseas)

As of 31 August 2023, BGO British Guides Overseas has been dissolved globally. We now are proud members of USAGSO, and look forward to continuing the legacy of supporting English-speaking girls in Luxembourg.

ABOUT US

Why Girl Scouts Overseas?

Not only do USAGSO members participate in the same great Girl Scout Leadership Experience as their stateside sister scouts, but they also experience much more. Many USAGSO families relocate every 2-4 years; USA Girl Scouts Overseas provides a sense of security and stability as families transition to new locations. Through USA Girl Scouts Overseas, girls find an immediate support network and friendship group with whom they have something in common: The Girl Scout Leadership Experience. Far from the United States, Girl Scouts connects girls to their American culture and, through our worldwide network, helps girls bridge cultural gaps and build friendships around the world. Our strong partnerships with the local Girl Guide/Scout programs provide opportunities for USAGSO members, and their families, to actively participate in bi-lateral host nation programs that are exciting, unique, and profound.
